The 2010 World Poker Tour Legends of Poker event begins this Friday, August 20th, from the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles.  It is a $5,000 buy-in into a No-limit Texas Hold Em’ event which will go through August 25th.

For the first time since the 2005 edition, the buy-in for the World poker Tour Main Event will not equal $10,000.  Officials have stated that they made this change in order to boost ratings and attendance at the event.  Attendance showed a 25 percent decrease from the 2008 tournament to the 2009 event.

Last year’s event was won by Prahlad Friedman, who bested Kevin Schaffel in the heads-up portions of the event.

The World Poker Tour Legend of Poker series includes many more events than the no-limit main event championship. in total, there have been 22 preliminary events with a variety of buy-ins for as little as $225 to $545.

This event goes on as the 2010 World Series of Poker begins to air on ESPN for the next several weeks in the series, including various championship headlined by the Main Event.The Main Event gives poker a boost in the ratings, in both tournaments and online poker.

Currently, a bill in Congress is challenging to make online poker in the United States legal and U.S financial institutions able to accept funds from American citizens.  The bill has cleared on hurdle, but will need to clear several more before it will ever see the floor and come into law.

CALGARY – while he deliberates his next move, Matt Jarvis is as still as a lizard on rock.

The 25-year-old from Surrey, B.C., is working on restraining his movement in preparation for the World Series of Poker championship final in Las Vegas in November.

Almost US$9 million in prize money rides on not letting even the smallest gesture give away what’s in his head or in his hand.

Sunglasses on, U2 playing in one ear from his iPod, his right hand splayed on the table and his left cupped over his pocket cards, even the air around him is calm.

“It’s very tough for other players to read me,” Jarvis said in Calgary during the Canadian Open Poker Championship. “I don’t ever say I have it nailed. I’m slowly moving towards it.”

He’s one of two Canadians in the “November Nine”, meaning he’s among the last nine players standing from the 7,319 who started out playing 57 events over 50 days from may 28 to July 17 in Las Vegas.

Jarvis and Jonathan Duhamel of Montreal will compete against the seven others for the most coveted title in poker starting Nov. 6 at the Rio Hotel and Casino. the final two will square off Nov. 8 with $8,944,138 going to the winner.

Jarvis was slinging wood in a lumber mill just a couple of years ago. Before that, he was a knife salesman while he attended business school.

He’s now living the dream of being on national television in Las Vegas with a big stack of chips in front of him.

“You go from being almost nobody to almost everyone in the poker room knowing who you are after that,” Jarvis said. “Not that I’m a guy who craves attention, but at the same time, it’s kind of nice. I don’t mind it either.

“It’s every poker player’s dream to get to this tournament.”

All nine WSOP finalists walked away from the table July 18 with $811,823 in their pockets and the knowledge they’d be back to play for much more. even fifth place in the final is worth over $2 million.

Duhamel heads into the final with the most chips carrying over from the last round. his chip count is 65.9 million while Jarvis is fifth at 16.7 million.

Jarvis has hired lawyers, accountants and a manager since July. He’s already claimed about $70,000 and the Canadian title in Calgary with more hands to be played before the Open ends Sunday.

“I’m such a competitive guy, I love the feel of victory and competing in things like this,” he said. “There’s pride in it too, but at the end of the day, it comes down to the dollars and cents. I think it’s always about the money.”

Jarvis’s job at the lumber mill was taking wood off a belt and tossing it into a bin for 12 hours a day. the pay was good, but the work mind-numbing, so he spent his days off playing online poker. he discovered he was making as much money at cards as he was at the mill.

When he quit the mill to concentrate on poker, his play initially took a dive because the pressure of having to feed, clothe and house himself solely on his winnings made him play differently. but in December 2008, when Jarvis strung together three wins in major online tournaments, he realized he could compete with the best in the world.

Jarvis almost didn’t go to Vegas this year because his father Norm, a former pro golfer, was diagnosed with cancer in his tonsils and lymph nodes. Norm underwent his final chemotherapy and radiation treatments this week.

“It was my dad who pushed me to go. he said ‘this is what you are meant to do,’” Jarvis said. “He was in rough shape for a while there, but it seems like he’s definitely progressing. I think he feels like he’s getting a lot better. You can hear excitement in his voice that maybe about a month ago wasn’t as much there.”

Norm played on the Canadian Tour and also spent a season on the Champions Tour. Jarvis carried his father’s bag for him on the latter and met stars such as Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw and Arnold Palmer.

The pro golf tour is also a place where nerves of steel are rewarded with celebrity and money. Jarvis discovered he liked that world.

“They just treat you like royalty out there,” he said. “I think that was great for me because I felt ‘they treat you so well on this tour, I really want something like that for myself.’

“I was good in a lot of sports, but not great and this was an opportunity for me to find that kind of life in something else.”

Concentrating for hours on end at the poker table takes a physical and mental toll.

Jarvis runs almost every day to prepare for a long day at the tables and sometimes he runs during the short breaks during a tournament. he watches what he eats. Jarvis cut alcohol out of his life nine months ago because he wants nothing dulling his edge at the poker table.

He’ll prepare for the final on two fronts. To keep his own game sharp, he plans to go to London in September for the World Series of Poker Europe and a European Poker Tour stop, with perhaps a tournament in Austria after that.

Jarvis will watch video of his opponents and their media interviews in order to put together personality profiles.

“A lot of people play to their personality,” he explains. “If they talk any strategy or anything like that, you want to pick up on it. It’s very rare anyone is going to give away any of their strategy tips, but you get inside their head and what they are feeling. It helps you decide what kind of buttons you can press once you get there.”

He’s also going to recruit his poker-playing friends to set up a mock finals table.

“I’m going to give my friends a week to study an opponent and replicate how they would act, or how they would respond,” he explained. “I have a group of friends who are solid poker players, so I’m going to bounce a lot of things off them and talk about different strategies.”

The life of a poker player isn’t mainstream. Jarvis admits his mother Diane, a schoolteacher, initially struggled with his decision to play cards for a living.

“She had a lot of family members who asked ‘what is your son doing?’ It wasn’t lying but she wasn’t shouting from the rooftops that I was playing poker and didn’t have a job,” he said.

“Now she is.”

Specifically I'm interested in hand rankings. the topic of debate was two flushes in Texas Hold 'Em, a 7 5 4 3 against a Q 7 5 4, and my group insisted it was a draw, despite showing them a Wikipedia article on hand rankings which said otherwise.

So since they're going to be sticklers for the source, I've been trying to find something which states the WSOP's or some other governing body of poker's ruling on things, but my search has turned up empty. Anyone know of, or can help me find, a solid source? I hope to set the record straight for future games with this group.

I hope you are winning a bunch of money since obviously your group knows nothing about poker. this is a no brainer and the fact that they were doubting you is surprising. I think Bicycle cards publishes a book with official rules for all sorts of games including poker.

Perched a couple hundred yards above the still freshly-mintedturf at Linfield Christian, Jimmy Kemmis’ corner of the athleticdepartment on campus has evolved into a shrine of sorts during the35-year-old’s short tenure at Temecula’s premier privateschool.

The photos, helmets and various memorabilia resting on bookcasesand tabletops chronicle his journey. the virtual rolodex inside hisPC can call up alumni with decades-old ties to his program. Thephotos mounted on his walls are snapshots of a day he had dreamedabout for years.

Muddied hands hoist a plaque in unison. Shots of cider sprayinto a crowd. A fight song echoes through the visiting stands atthe end of a cold, soggy night.

Yes, Jimmy Kemmis had won baseball titles as a Linfield Lion.Deep down, he always knew a football championship was an entirelydifferent kind of moment to savor.

“The losses, unfortunately, are what I really remember from mycareer,” Kemmis said, recalling the semifinal defeat that ended hisplaying days in the early ’90s. “That last game, I can tell youeverything about it. I can tell you how we couldn’t block thatdefensive end and how he got me in the backfield before I couldeven get going. how we weren’t prepared to stop their wing-Toffense. …

“That moment for me,” Kemmis said, nodding toward the photosscattered across his wall, “… baseball was fun for me, but thiswas the moment I thought of since I was 16 years old. to lift upthat (plaque) on the field in that mud, to beat Rio Hondo that way,it was small school football at its best.”

Indeed it was. It also capped a weekend this Valley won’t soonforget.

An unprecedented three local football teams advanced to thefinal week of the playoffs, each with legitimate claims to a statebowl invitation and a place alongside this area’s most storiedmoments.

There’s the World War II-era Hemet team that lapped and lappedand lapped its opponents. There’s the start-up school that won twotitles under a head coach who ushered this Valley into a new erabefore his emotional goodbye.

There’s the Elsinore team and its four finals berths, theearliest in 1933, the Murrieta Valley star who landed in the NFL,the school on the edge of the Valley whose title run felt like atrip through West Texas.

They all hold their special place in Valley football lore.

That stormy December weekend in 2009, though — whenSouthwestern League rivals Chaparral and Vista Murrieta had it out,once and for all, on a rain-slicked field and Linfield tied a muddybow on top of a perfect 14-0 season — stands above them all.

Setting the stage

Coley Candaele didn’t want this phone call.

Thirteen games into the 2009 season, the Vista Murrieta programhe had nurtured from the ground up was on the verge of taking itsplace alongside California high school football powerhouses.

Think Concord de La Salle. Oceanside. Santa Ana MaterDei. Thirteen games and 13 victories, each of them inching theBroncos closer to preferred company. the only remaining obstacle?Another matchup with Southwestern League rival Chaparral.

“If we beat Chaparral, we were in,” said Candaele, recalling aphone call he received — and largely kept to himself — theTuesday leading up to the CIF Southern Section Inland Divisionchampionship. “The kids didn’t know, but I knew — and I didn’ttell anyone. At that point, you want that phone call — but youdon’t.

“You want it because you’re in the position and you want theopportunity. But you don’t want it because I knew the Chaparralgame was going to be very difficult. You’re playing a team that’s 5miles away, playing a team you already beat and playing a team fromyour league.

“That’s hard. I knew all those distractions were enough forus.”

Toppling distractions, of course, has been Candaele’s specialty.the son of a college football coach and a former state player ofthe year, he had come within a game of winning a league title hisfirst year with seniors and ran off three perfect regular seasonsin a span of four years.

Until last year, though, his Broncos had yet to trek deep intothe postseason.

One buzzsaw after another, Vista Murrieta was sent packingbefore the calendar hit December.

This last year, the Broncos became the buzzsaw. They cut throughCorona Santiago for a second time that season, thumped Redlands,endured a nail-biter against Norco (more on that in the top-10list) and came out on the other end with an unblemished recordfueled by an emerging top prospect at quarterback and perhaps thecounty’s stingiest defense.

Finally, all that stood in their way of that first section crownwas a Chaparral team the Broncos swatted away 32-13 in aSouthwestern League clash nearly two months earlier.

The Pumas, of course, were no strangers to a championship stageand all that comes with it.

Their brash, controversial head coach led them there his firstyear with the program and had his team within a touchdown ofupsetting eventual state champion Corona Centennial on its homefield in Temecula in 2008.

Then last year, the Tom Leach-led Pumas lost games tostate-ranked Centennial and Anaheim Servite in a span of four weeksand lost their head coach to a suspension stemming from an act ofunsportsmanlike conduct the week the Pumas were to play theBroncos.

To this day, Leach insists what played out on the field thatOctober — a thorough beating that exposed a number of Pumas’weaknesses — would have happened regardless of his status thatweek.

“I’ve said it before,” Leach said. “It really opened our eyes.They really outcoached us in that game, and it wasn’t because Iwasn’t on the field. that game really helped us turn our seasonaround.”

The Pumas spent the next several weeks circling the wagons. Bythe time they emerged from a gut-wrenching playoff run, they stoodbefore the Broncos as the team they believed they were to start theseason.

“We felt deep inside that this was a sure thing,” Pumasoffensive coordinator Jon Mitchell said. “We still thought we weregoing to win it all. We (urinated) down our leg for three games,but we still felt it was our year.”

All in the Valley

Two Southwestern League teams emerged from the pileup in theInland Division.

Only one colleague wanted any part of the pick ‘em column TheCalifornian ran leading up to the big game to be held at VistaMurrieta.

Picking against a league foe throws an unwanted target on yourback, they claimed — even in fun. Picking against two teams aspolarizing as the Pumas and Broncos is a definite no-no.

Their fans are heard in mass on message boards, their coachingmethods clash — sometimes directly with each other — and theirgames are seemingly always decided by a point or two.

A battle for the section crown, one of these days, was alwaysinevitable.

“Tommy is a different guy, but so is Coley — they are polaropposites,” Temescal Canyon coach Russ Strange said before the twoteams squared off last December. “It’s kind of like the odd couple.you appreciate them both.

“If you asked me if Vista Murrieta and Chaparral would be in therunning to be here at the beginning of the year, I would have said,’Absolutely, they’d be there.’ “

That Friday night, anyone who had anything to do with Valleyfootball was there, too.

Kemmis, in fact, lifted curfew for his boys — many of whom grewup playing Pop Warner with the likes of the Pumas’ Jonathan Diazand Mitch Glasmann — to attend the game. He was staying home tocelebrate his 35th birthday with his family. His players andcoaches, though, could stay as long as they liked, so long as theystayed dry. So the Lions piled into the Broncos’ stadium and linedthe sidelines along with staffs from Great Oak to Temescal Canyonto Redlands East Valley to Norco.

Sure, the temperatures dropped. the skies opened up from time totime. none of it sapped the energy on a night that somehow trumpedthe atmosphere the night the Pumas hosted the championship againstCentennial a year earlier.

“It was just crazy, with it raining all week and playing VistaMurrieta,” Diaz said. “I’ve never felt that way at a football gamebefore. there was just something about that game. It took theemotion of playing football to a whole new level.”

On the field, a defensive struggle emerged.

A 2,000-yard rusher a year ago, Diaz was held to 49 yards on theground. Vista Murrieta quarterback Derrick Brown was limited to asingle touchdown — a 43-yard pass that tied the score at 7-7 with6:38 left in the half — after accounting for more than 30 scoresthroughout the season.

“We played all year as the underdog — the gutty littleBroncos,” Candaele said. “… (The second time we played Chaparral)they were the attacking team and we were the passive team. Theymade plays and we had the ball in hand eight times to the win thegame. Dropped ball. Underthrown ball. Sack.

“Eight times, we had the ball in hand to win it.”

Neither defense budged in the second half and neither teamscored again. with the clock winding down, Glasmann hit widereceiver Antoine Arnold for a pair of third-down conversion passesthat sustained a game-ending drive.

Yet even with a few ticks left on the clock, Leach refused tolet his staff celebrate until the final kneeldown. Amid a wildcelebration that broke out on the Chaparral sideline and spilledout onto midfield — not to mention actions that will have Arnoldsuspended for the Vista Murrieta game this season — Leach wrestledwith his emotions as he embraced Broncos and Pumas alike.

Finally, Leach had his championship. still, a staff and itsplayers were hurting, and this part of winning a championshipwasn’t lost on Leach. after all, he’d been there before.

“It was such a relief, because we’d been so close the lastcouple of years,” Leach said. “I had all this overwhelming feeling,and then I felt bad for them, because we had been in their shoes.that really, really hurt knowing they had great seniors — RyanHofmeister and Eddie Lackey and Hayden Clegg and John Hardy.

“We respect the (heck) out of those players.”

Their slice of history

Brandon Blake didn’t stay to see the commotion unfold at VistaMurrieta — the tears, the hugs, the hoisting of a plaque. Itwasn’t because he was following Kemmis’ orders to stay dry,either.

“To be honest, my motive was my own,” said Blake, Linfield’sstar defensive back/wide receiver. “I know all the guys onChaparral and I said, ‘Hi,’ to them. But I left in the thirdquarter. I just didn’t want to see a championship won until it wasus doing it.”

Standing shirtless behind the end zone at Covina DistrictStadium the next night, Blake envisioned it all as Mother Naturepounded the old grass field more than 70 miles away from home.

The Broncos and Pumas, you see, had it easy on the turf field atVista Murrieta, and Diaz and Glasmann and a handful of Pumas onhand to back their neighbor school were there to see that nothingwas going to be easy for Linfield Christian or Arcadia Rio HondoPrep, two 13-0 teams meeting at a neutral site to decide theNortheast Division championship.

Yet any concerns Kemmis had about his players’ ability to copewith the elements were wiped away the minute he stepped outside thelocker room and saw his players soaking up the atmosphere as thewater pooled in pockets throughout the field.

“The field’s just a mess, and I remember walking in and seeing abunch of my boys just standing shirtless in the rain,” Kemmis said.”I saw that and I thought, ‘This is the way the boys want it, too.’”

And why wouldn’t they? the weather played into the hands of adefense that had pitched six shutouts, two in the playoffs, and theLions were lining up against the team that ended their season ayear ago in the semifinals.

Sure, Rio Hondo had won 12 section titles and Linfield had beendenied in the semis six times. on this night, though, even as thefield turned to mush between the 30s, the Lions refused to bedenied.

They weathered eight fumbles and four turnovers, had star soccerplayer Jordan Brown manage a field goal off the sloppy field thatslowed 2,000-yard rusher Austin Maranville and turned to linebackerZac Starrett for the team’s lone touchdown, a pass from JustinCarter for the first and only varsity score of Starrett’scareer.

The rest of the story was defense. three consecutive times inthe third and fourth quarters, the Lions stopped Rio Hondo Prepdrives in their own territory.

Then a final kneeldown sent the Lions — with their crisp, whiteuniforms muddied from head to toe — into a pileup at midfield thatlives on in the photos on Kemmis’ wall.

“As a kid, winning a baseball championship was such a whirlwind– I can only remember snippets,” Kemmis said. “This is so muchmore fulfilling to do this as an adult.

“These are some of the favorite moments of my life.”

PREP FOOTBALL: Three Valley teams played for titles last December. Two walked away with championships.

Sept. 05–BROWNSVILLE — look out! Sex-crazed reefer zombies are attacking venues around the world!!!

“Doctor S The Movie,” directed by Brownsville native Bryan Ortiz, is a zany comedy horror flick set in 1964. in the movie, communists are sending marijuana reefers to the United States to destroy America’s youth, and a scientist, Doctor S, begins doing experiments on the marijuana.

“Doctor S comes up with this idea to increase its effects even more and then send it back over to the communists to fight ‘em back,” said Ortiz, 25, who lives in San Antonio. “The government takes hold of it, they change it, and they test it on a small town called Crystal Oaks, the town that he’s in. The teens smoke this new batch of reefer, and they turn into these reefer zombies.”

However, the experiment gets out of control, Ortiz said. Doctor S smokes his own version of the reefer and he changes, the zombies change and the U.S. Government loses control of everything in the town.

“Doctor S,” Ortiz said, was filmed in San Antonio and will be screened Monday at the Dragon con International Film Festival in Atlanta.

The film was also shown last year at the Leeds International Film Festival, San Antonio Film Festival, the Brainwash Movie Festival, the Horrific Film Festival, and the Chicago Horror Film Festival. It was also screened at the Spooky Movie Festival in Washington, D.C.

“That’s just a small part of the list,” Ortiz said with a laugh.

This is his first feature-length film, and it arose out of a small trailer he and producer Michael Druck created to enter a contest presented by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. when Druck approached him about entering the contest, Ortiz had just finished another project and didn’t want to jump right into that. However, an idea began to form in his mind.

“I was thinking of some old school Grind House things and stuff that I had liked and researched,” said Ortiz, who graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 2003 and the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio in 2008 with a degree in theater.

“All of a sudden, this weird idea in my brain just started kicking in. It was about a mad scientist killing teenagers in the woods, and I thought ‘Oh, man that sounds crazy,’ and it just popped into my head,” he said. “Then the title came and I thought, ‘Doctor S Battles Sex-Crazed Reefer Zombies.”

Ortiz and Druck decided to make the small trailer for the contest but it didn’t place. by then, however, they had fallen in love with the project and decided to develop it into a full-length, black-and-white feature film. It was a labor of love that went against established norms for current films.

“Movies that are black and white and are of this kind of subject matter really have a hard time sometimes going anywhere in general,” Ortiz said. “It’s made to look old and dirty and all that kind of stuff. sometimes you can’t find success in those kinds of things.

“But for us, in our case, the response has been overwhelmingly fantastic. People gravitate toward the title and they see the flick and they really understand what’s going on. And you know if you’re a zombie fan or an old school horror fan, then you see this movie and it rings in your brain.”

Ortiz is no stranger to film; he’s been making short films since 2005.

“I just started pumping out shorts like crazy just to express myself, and that got me through the door to meet people and learn the community in San Antonio,” he said. “Originally I decided to do subject matter that I thought was difficult. so I started doing like psychological type pieces, like science of sleep, internal sunshine, stuff like that, just kind of mind-melding kind of ideas.”

From that he moved into horror, suspense thrillers, comedies and dramas.

“I tried to arrange myself to understand what I’m good at, and what I’m not good at that I can improve on,” he said. “So literally I just kind of try and touch all kinds of gambits, all kinds of things to keep myself busy and understand what’s possible for me.”

right now Ortiz and the others who worked on the film are looking for a distributor to make it available on Netflix and other venues, or for a sales agency that will help them sell the film to a distributor.

“We’re always open to screenings and of course the Valley is home for me, so I’d love to bring it down there sometime,” Ortiz said.
